The combination of women and bicycling is a coalescence of convenience, wants and needs, efficiency and affordability, and a sign of the times—it just doesn’t get any better.
Unfortunately, with the slow agonizing death of the automobile, women are tending to find themselves “out of the knowledge loop” as to all things bike related, as more and more people are walking, traveling by mass transit, and of course, traveling and using bikes more and more.
Women and bikes have reached a crossroads–it’s forward, stagnant, or backwards.
Spoke Sisters is an interconnected international forum for woman around the world to share and learn, to write and listen, to give and get advice, and to teach and learn about the issues should anticipate and will face when using bicycling as a means of transportation and recreation.
The percentage of female bike riders compared to males is inordinately low. This is not a statistical anomaly or a fluke but due to societal and cultural pressures.
Spoke Sisters goal is to change their relationships with Bikes forever
As a means to an end Spoke Sisters was created to advocate on behalf of women and bicycling, and to bring it front and center in the news. By forging this movement, together women from all around the world will be able to talk, learn, share, advocate, blog, and communicate with one another and to learn about the pressing issues facing women and their gender specific roles when bicycling and why it’s such an important topic at or near the top of our priorities.
Women and Bicycles
Currently, the ratio between male and female bike riders is as high as 80% men to 20% women. Our general and specific concerns are vastly different then that of what men typically have to face–we have unique and special issues, one of which that is high on the list of concerns is fear. Women having genuine concerns regarding their safety about getting to and from their destinations when bicycling be it for work, fun, exercise, or as an alternative means for getting to intended destinations.
Spoke Sisters is both a movement and an organization, which has various goals but share a common theme–to assist women who want to learn more about how the carbon based economy will dramatically alter and change how we travel. With a sense of purpose and passion, Spoke Sisters was developed to get more women biking, safely and confidently. As individuals we have numbers, but as a group we can address these issues, learn from each other, and help each other, plus become a force to be reckoned with.
